Weekend Food for Kids
by Mary Jo Hamilton
For the past 6 years UUCP and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church have collaborated on the Weekend Food for Kids program during the summer months. Around 30% of the children in the Moscow School District are eligible for free or reduced – price breakfasts and lunches. During the summer MSD provides free lunches to kids ages 0-18. Monday through Friday. WFFK provides bags of kid-friendly healthy non-perishable food for school kids every Friday in conjunction with the MSD’s free lunch program.
By the end of summer 2019 we were serving about 140 kids per week. Food insecurity in Latah County is expected to reach 16.5% this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, so we are expecting the demand for the extra food will be even higher. This all-volunteer program is supported by contributions from individuals and local service groups and churches. In addition, local fruit growers donate fresh summer fruit as it comes available. This summer we are receiving support from the Idaho Food Bank with some food items. If you would like to make a donation to the Weekend Food for Kids program, send a check to UUCP with WFFK in the memo line. These kids and their families.
