More than Just a Season

Sunday service 9:30 a.m.
Speaker: Melodie Rai
Celebrant: Eric Wegner

Seasons. Some we hate to see go, some we hate to have come, and around here we certainly value our sunny days! For me, seasons mean more than a time of cold or a time to plant and go fishing. Seasons help me balance my living, providing me with lessons and with hope. I'll explain what I mean.

Tami's Got Her Ph.D. and We're Moving Party

Please join Cathy Green and Tami Moore to celebrate their ten years in Moscow and at the UUCP on Sunday, July 20. Put on your heartiest singing voice and come out for the 10th annual UUCP Gospel Music Sunday service at 9:30am, and plan to stay for lunch on the grounds or in the church basement afterward, 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

If you are planning to come for lunch only, we'd love to see you any time between 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Cathy and Tami will provide the fried chicken and potato salad. Please bring a dish to share if you like.

We'll be leaving for Oklahoma on July 21 so we look forward to this opportunity to say goodbye to our dear friends and UUCP family -- new friends and old are welcome to join the festivities.

10th Annual Gospel Music Celebration

Sunday service 9:30 a.m.
Co-Celebrants: Tami Moore and Jim Weddell

It's been 10 years since "sister" Tami Lea Moore invited us to celebrate gospel music in our Unitarian-Universalist church, and the response has been phenomenal. Join Sister (now Reverend-Doctor) Tami Lea, and Rev. Jim-Bob Weddell as we send Tami joyfully back to Oklahoma with a 10-year Anniversary Gospel Music
Send-Off. A traditional "lunch on the grounds" will follow the service. Please bring a dish to share. The moon-pies and RCs are on Rev. Jim-Bob.

Informed Consent

Sunday service 9:30 a.m.
Speaker: Dan Schmidt
Celebrant: Judy LaLonde

The concept of informed consent in healthcare is at the nexus of responsibility and paternalism. We will examine this legal concept and consider the medical profession's response to it. What does this tell us of what is expected from our professionals? What does this tell us of ourselves?

Religious Freedom and the First Amendment

Sunday service 9:30 a.m.
Speaker: Donna Bradberry
Celebrant: Steve Cooke

We will celebrate and learn more about this nation's amazing history of the development of the individual's right to religious freedom and the right of conscience. Flow Revisited: Csikszentmihalyi Meets Ellis

Sunday service 9:30 a.m.
Speaker: Steve Cooke
Celebrant: Elizabeth Berlinger [not Judy Brown as given in June newsletter]

Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi describes the psychology of optimal experience in his 1991 book called Flow. Flow is described as the optimal combination of challenge and skill. Albert Ellis, the father of cognitive behavior therapy, has explained how to cope with frustration by being both disappointed and accepting of reality. Are these secular theories of grace? Are they competitive or complementary?
